Visiting Virginia Beach in Winter

Sharing is caring!

Virginia Beach Winter

If you live along the East Coast, you can take a quick, long weekend to visit Virginia Beach this winter and have lots to do! Most people automatically think summer when you think about any destination with “beach” in it’s name, but Virginia Beach offers so many things to do year round, you won’t want to miss a winter getaway here.

Brewing a Great Beer Scene

Over the past two years, Virginia Beach has given rise to an emerging and distinct craft beer scene. There is definitely something awesome brewing – a really great craft brew scene. There’s no better way to get a taste of the beach life than to pull up a bar stool and sample the coastal flavors of Virginia Beach. From pineapple IPA’s to hearty pumpkin porters, Virginia Beach’s local brewers pour their passion into every pint. For the perfect mix of suds and sun, visit a local Virginia Beach brewery or sample them all on a brewery tour.

Winter in Virginia Beach

During the winter months, Virginia Beach happily provides travelers with mild temperatures, stunning sunsets, smaller crowds and an array of incredible wildlife, making for an unforgettable winter tale. You will find a variety activities that are perfect  for the season.

Sit back, cruise and whale-watch for an unforgettable experience, with views of the world’s largest and most beautiful marine mammals. Book a Rudee’s Winter Wildlife Whale-Watching Cruise or hop aboard a Whales & Wildlife Sea Adventure at the Virginia Aquarium to be led on an educational expedition along the Atlantic coast, searching for whales, dolphins, seals and a variety of species of birds. Maybe on your tour, an aquatic gentle giant will decide to show off by breaching, flipper slapping or tail-lobbing. Be sure to have your camera ready, because it’s such an incredible and breathtaking sight!

With a variety of horseback riding opportunities available, you need only choose your charger and get to galloping. For a local experience like no other, look no farther than the beaches of the Resort Beach, where Virginia Beach Horseback offers guided rides along the surf during the fall, winter and spring months. All experience levels are welcomed, so if a John Wayne movie represents the extent of your cowboy know-how, fear not.  All riders will be instructed on how to become one with the horse before setting foot in a stirrup. Saddle up, grab the reigns and ride off into the Virginia Beach sunset.

With December and January being the peak season for rockfish (striped bass), striper, black sea bass, flounder, speckled trout and blueline tilefish – all available within 50 miles! That’s not surprising though, since the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is considered to be the largest and most biologically diverse estuary in the U.S., yielding more seafood than any of the country’s other 840 estuaries, making us seafood-lovers incredibly lucky.

Beautiful harvested Lynnhaven oysters were once coveted around the world  and served to presidents and royalty for their size, saltiness and gentle zing, these delicious little bivalves are being harvested right in the Lynnhaven River, where visitors have the chance to take a boat tour of the oyster-farm and enjoy a unique Chef’s Table experience right on the water – waders included!

I think beaches in the winter are even more enticing than in the summer. And I do love the idea of a nice warming craft beer!
