How to Have a Stress-Free Flight in 5 Steps

We all dream of our next vacation, don’t we? You get to get away from ordinary life and explore new places with the ones closest to you. 

Flying to your destination, however, often comes with its own stresses. You have to worry about everything from budgeting to actually sitting on a plane for hours. 

Your flight can set the mood for the whole trip. If it goes well, you’ll likely be set up for a great vacation. If it doesn’t go well, you might find yourself on a subpar vacation. It can even scare you away from flights in the future.

We’ve gathered some practical tips that’ll help your flight go as smoothly as possible. Read on to learn 5 ways you can make your trip less stressful! 

1) Determine If Flying Is the Right Choice

Flying might not be the most ideal option to get to your final destination. If it isn’t too far from you, why put yourself through the risk of a stressful flight when a road trip could be a great experience? This option might also save you money if you’re on a budget. 

In most circumstances, however, flying is the most convenient option. Especially for destinations that are particularly far away, flying is usually your best bet.

Just make sure that you are physically capable of handling long flights. If you need to stretch your legs, investigate longer layover options so you’re at least not trapped on a plane for hours. 

2) Find Affordable Tickets

Flying can be expensive, especially if you wait until the last minute to book seats. Make sure you plan your vacation in advance so that you can buy tickets at the appropriate time. Otherwise you might be angry you spent more money than you needed to. 

It is important to do your research when deciding when to book your flight. If your vacation is in the spring, for instance, it is recommended that you buy tickets 3 months in advance to get the best deals. This will all vary, however, based on where you’re going, what airline you are using, etc. 

You should also consider what’s included with your tickets. You might find really cheap tickets, but then end up paying additional fees anyway. Do you get to pick your seat? Do you have to pay extra for carry-ons and additional baggage? Are there free in-flight snacks?

3) Pack Smart

There is a fine line when it comes to packing. You don’t want to over pack, but you also don’t want to forget anything important.

Know your airline’s regulations and pack efficiently to avoid excessive baggage fees and having to shuffle around your possessions at the airport. 

4) Bring Essential Items For the Flight 

Because you’ll be stuck in the air for hours, it can become uncomfortable and boring. Take into account the following considerations:

  • Pack airport-friendly snacks, or take advantage of ones served on the flight. 
  • Use compression socks that increase blood circulation and prevent soreness. 
  • Bring a neck pillow and blanket to take naps.
  • Pack entertainment: headphones, books, crossword puzzles, and tablets. Choose an airline with in-flight entertainment or Wi-Fi.

5) Prepare For the Day of Your Flight

On the big day, you want everything to go smoothly so that your vacation isn’t delayed. 

Plan to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes early, perhaps even earlier if you are checking baggage or if you’re flying during a busy season. This will allow you plenty of time to work your way through lines and get settled. 

Print your tickets out beforehand or have them ready on your phone.

When it comes to airport security, know the regulations that are in place. Don’t bring anything that you can’t take on a flight, and cooperate with the officials.
