I am patiently waiting for this newest movie. There is so much about it that has me loving it before it is even out! The “girl power” message is a truly important part of the story for sure!
MOANA arrives in theaters everywhere on November 23rd!
The Story
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
Moana’s Animal Companions
It’s kind of a tradition at Walt Disney Animation Studios that the hero or heroine of each new production has an animal companion. Sometimes they talk (Flounder in The Little Mermaid) and sometimes they don’t (Abu in Aladdin). But these furry, feathered or finny friends always provide support – emotional and otherwise – for that film’s lead character. They often provide a great deal of laughter too! The animal companions always find a way – even when they can’t talk – to be a part of the action. Because Moana is so special – she gets 2!
Pua is Moana’s pet pig. A tiny black and white porker, Pua is sweet and loyal to his master, the 16-year-old daughter of the Chief of Motunui. Pua is more puppy than pig. And then there’s Heihei. Who’s really a dumb cluck. The village idiot in rooster form. The dumbest character in the history of Disney animation.
Easter Eggs!
Prepare to search and be surprised!
Like many Disney movies before it, Moana will feature Easter eggs that reference past and future movies. Moana directors Ron Clements and John Musker, who have also directed The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules, told Buzzfeed that their new South Pacific feature will include The Little Mermaid and Frozen Easter eggs. Flounder will make an appearance, which makes sense since the ocean plays a major role in Moana. As for Frozen, apparently everyone’s favorite snowman Olaf will also appear in the movie. A snowman in the South Pacific?! I can’t wait to see how that plays out! There will be other Easter eggs as well, but you will have to keep your eyes searching during the movie!
