The Practically Perfect in Every Way Mary Poppins Returns Trailer

Let me tell you a secret: When the original Mary Poppins movie released in 1964, I was just a month shy of 10 years old. My parents had recently divorced. My mom went to work and each day after school, my sister and I had to go to the convent with the nuns from our Catholic school to do our homework and wait for our mother to come from work. I secretly wished, as only a 10 year old can, that Mary Poppins would come and take care of us each day after school! I wanted to dance with penguins. I wanted to go fly a kite! After all, in every job that must be done – there is an element of fun! I continue to watch the original movie still. Sing each song. Smile and laugh as if I’m seeing it for the first time.

Mary Poppins Returns Official Trailer

One of my very, very favorite films of all times is the original Mary Poppins. The original movie from 1964 won 13 Academy Awards! Even more important it delighted the world with songs we still sing and quotes we still remember. Who can forget things like – “In every job that must be done there is an element of fun,” – “Anything can happen if you let it,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” – “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,”  or “Practically perfect in every way!” – just to name a few.

In the sequel, which arrives in theaters this Christmas, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives. The film will bring us back to the world of 1964 Mary Poppinsbut with a twist. The story will take place in London, in the middle of the Depression. Michael, who was just a child in Mary Poppins, is now an adult widower. He has three children and his sister Jane helps to take care of them. The family has still fallen on hard times, menaced by a ruthless bank manager played by Colin Firth.

Mary Poppins (played by Emily Blunt) returns at the end of a kite (just like in the original) to help the family rediscover the joy that is missing in their lives. The cast and characters of Mary Poppins Returns include Lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda); Topsy, Mary’s cousin (Meryl Streep); and Hollywood greats Angela Lansbury, as a balloon seller, and Dick van Dyke, returning as the bank chairman. It is directed by Rob Marshall.
