So I told y’all about my home buying tips in an earlier post. Then I had the opportunity to participate in a roundtable interview with Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot of HGTV’s Love It or List It, Too. <Insert happy dance here>
What a fun and intimate experience. There were about 6 of us sitting in a semi-circle while Jillian and Todd chatted with us and answered our questions. So after I put my fangirling in check (oh my gosh, Jillian and Todd!! In person!! Live!! In front of me!!! They’re so pretty!! And nice!! And funny!!), it was time to get to work.
We first had design questions. Todd talked about their show Love It or List It, Too, and about the fantasy of the show. But one of the kernels that they try to focus on is the functionality. “It has to be a home for the people that live there.” So when decorating or remodeling, Todd suggests asking yourself, “How do you create that space so when people come into your home, they feel cozy and invited?”
Jillian suggested to avoid super trendy things and focus on longevity. “When it comes to home decor – is it authentic? Decorate with things that have a function and are beautiful.” I asked her for examples, since I have young children, I sometimes feel like I can’t have nice things. She gave an example of using nice, white mixing bowls instead of plastic ones. It serves a function, but they can also be put on display. Also use ottomans or side tables with storage to hide some kids’ items. I don’t know about you, but we have so.much.stuff. It’s like these kids keep asking for things for every Christmas and birthday and Easter and 3rd Wednesday. Sheesh.
Also Jillian loves built-ins. She says floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall built-ins. They don’t have to be expensive. Get your Ikea on, people.
The reason Jillian and Todd are in the Dallas area is to help promote Capital One’s awesome new online tools. Let me tell you, Todd is passionate about his finance. He says it’s the boring stuff, but “The financing side is just as important as finding the right home.” And he’s right. We’re on our 4th home, and doing your homework and research is important. It makes me stabby when people don’t research their Walt Disney World vacations, because it’s a chunk of change. Now imagine my (and Todd’s) level of stabbiness when people don’t do the homework when purchasing a new home – which is a huuuge investment.
Smart Home Loans has a lot of important information for prospective home buyers. Capital One’s website allows you to prequalify and track your progress online from the application to closing time! You can come check out the tools at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco, TX tomorrow, December 12, 2015 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Come meet Jillian and Todd, too, from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. They are the real deal. Super sweet, personable, smart, and fun to be around. Jillian is pretty much a master selfie taker, too.
Selling Your Home
And if you’ve been wanting to purchase a new home, but your other half isn’t on board, I’m sure Todd can convince them to List It! 😉 If you’re getting ready to sell your house, Jillian suggests purging as much as possible and having a freshly painted, clean, bright home. That will bring the buyers a running.
I can’t wait to see your Jillian selfies! A big thank you to Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot for being so kind and gracious. Now I want to do some home projects…or move.
