I’ve been looking forward to “The Finest Hours.” I’m a fan of action movies, a fan of several of the stars and a huge fan of any movie that tells a true story. “The Finest Hours” is a heroic action-thriller that tells the remarkable true story of the most daring rescue mission in the history of the Coast Guard. Presented in Digital 3D™, Real D 3D and IMAX® 3D, the film will transport audiences to the heart of the action, creating a fully-immersive cinematic experience on an epic scale.
In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by a huge and brutal nor’easter storm. As the weather wreaked havoc on land, the freezing Atlantic became a wind-whipped zone of peril, setting the stage for one of the most heroic rescue stories ever lived.
In the early hours of Monday, February 18, while the storm raged, two oil tankers, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer, found themselves in the same horrifying predicament. Built with “dirty steel,” and not prepared to withstand such ferocious seas, both tankers split in two, leaving the dozens of men on board utterly at the Atlantic’s mercy. The SS Pendleton, a T-2 oil tanker bound for Boston, which was literally ripped in half, trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly-sinking stern. As the senior officer on board, first assistant engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) soon realizes it is up to him to take charge of the frightened crew and inspire the men to set aside their differences and work together to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast. “The Finest Hours” is the gripping, true story of the valiant attempt to rescue the souls huddling inside the broken halves of the two ships. The story is overflowing with breathtaking scenes, as boats capsize, bows and sterns crash into one another, and men hurl themselves into the raging sea in a terrifying battle for survival. Not all of the men survived, but by some form of a miracle—many came home to tell their story.
“The Finest Hours” tells the true story of what everyone involved went through. Despite overwhelming odds, four members of the Coast Guard, led by Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine), set out in a wooden lifeboat with an ill-equipped engine and little, if any, means of navigation, facing frigid temperatures, 60-foot high waves and hurricane-force winds. “The Finest Hours” chronicles their fear, their courage and their determination. It chronicles the willingness of members of the Coast Guard to risk their owns lives to save the lives of others. It’s one of those chilling stories that will have you perched on the edge of your seat.
