Move over Avengers, there’s a new super hero in town- meet Ant-Man. The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man” opening everywhere July 17. But just who is Ant-Man?

In the Marvel universe, there have actually been 3 characters known as Ant-Man and writer Edgar Wright will incorporate two of them into the movie- Scott Land and Dr. Frank Pym.

First up Frank Pym, who was the original Ant-Man. Frank was first introduced in 1962 in “Tales to Astonish #27” which was a straight up sci-fi story instead of a super hero tale. Frank was a scientist who developed a shrinking serum, which later became known as Pym Particles. He inadvertently wound up in an anthill and 8 issues later came back as Ant-Man, now equipped with a costume and a helmet that enabled him to communicate with ants. Pym would continue to fight off the forces of evil in the “Tales to Astonish” series and was soon joined by assistant, and ranking heroine and love interest, The Wasp.

The duo would become founding members of the The Avengers fighting recurring enemies including Pym’s own robotic creation Ultron.

While Pym was the original Ant-Man, he has adopted other aliases over the years including Giant-Man, Goliath and Yellowjacket and the Wasp after Janet’s presumed death. Leaving his original persona vacant, his successors have taken up the role of Ant-Man while Pym explored these other identities.

Enter Scott Lang, a thief who first became Ant-Man after stealing Henry Pym’s Ant-Man suit to save his daughter Cassie from a heart condition. Reforming from his life of crime, he soon took on a full-time career as Ant-Man with the encouragement of Hank Pym.

This summer Marvel brings to life this small but mightiest of super heroes when they bring this founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
