Life is an adventure for Maya, the clever and resourceful monkey in Disneynature’s new feature film “Monkey Kingdom. Set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia, “Monkey Kingdom” capitalizes on its stunning environment. “As the film opens, we meet our Castle Rock troop in a big, beautiful fig tree that is a perfect metaphor for the group’s social ladder,” says Disneynature producer Kristina Reed. “The alpha male is at the top and we work our way down. Maya’s not even in the tree. “They’re extremely intelligent animals,” continues Reed. “They have a very complex social hierarchy that in many ways mirrors many examples of human society through the ages. Only in Maya’s world, once you’re born into a certain rank—you’re pretty much stuck there.”
Maya is scrappy, by necessity, and does a good job of “It’s our world. We’re living wild and free.” She is taking care of herself, despite her colorful higher-ranking troop mates who get first dibs at anything worth having. But when Maya becomes a mother, her world is forever changed. She’s determined to give her son the kind of upbringing that will arm him to lead his own troop someday. But that won’t be easy—even for a resourceful monkey like Maya. “I think everybody roots for the underdog,” says co-director Alastair Fothergill. “And she’s the classic underdog. But don’t sell her short. She’s a smart girl.”
