Captain America: The Winter Soldier in Theaters 4-4-14 by GayleTurner

Ok –  anyone that knows me knows that when it comes to a new action adventure movie, I am ready to go on a moment’s notice. And if that movie just happens to be part of the Marvel comics kingdom, I will sit through it no questions asked without even a kernel of popcorn, although I must admit popcorn makes every movie better. To say that I’m more than a little excited over the upcoming release of Captain America: Winter Soldier” on April 4 goes without saying. I’ll be the first to admit, there may have been a time or two that I might just have run around with a garbage can lid keeping the universe safe from the bad guys but then who hasn’t?  Is there a person around that can possibly not be enamored with this magnificent not quite a super hero, super hero? With his boyish next-door good looks, charm and wit, here is someone that was once considered too frail to enlist in the U.S. Military during World War II, so he did what any young red-blooded patriotic citizen would do -volunteer himself to receive an experimental Super-Soldier Serum. Suddenly enhanced to the pinnacle of human physical potential, Captain America was born-or reborn.

Captain America Black Widow 2

But as anyone will tell you, behind every successful man, super hero, or not, is a woman showing him the way, even when he may not readily admit it and thus even though her name is not in the title, this latest installment from the brilliant team of Marvel and Walt Disney Motion Picture Studios, the real star of this movie just may be The Black Widow. In “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,Steve Rogers, teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C. For those that somehow have been living on a deserted island for the last few decades, the Black Widow, once again brilliantly brought to life by Scarlett Johansson, was first introduced to the Marvel audience as a Russian spy and antagonist of Iron Man. Recognizing that good always triumphs over evil, she eventually defected to the United States, and became an agent of the spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D as well as a member of the superhero team.

Captain America 3

The official rundown of the movie is this:

After everything that happened in New York with The Avengers, Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, is trying to adjust to modern life and live quietly in Washington, D.C. But a superhero’s work is never done, and when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes entangled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Captain America joins forces with the Black Widow and tries to expose the ever-widening conspiracy all while fighting off professional assassins sent to kill him. When the big picture comes into focus, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of Falcon. Soon enough though, they find themselves up against the Winter Soldier.

Will Captain America and The Black Widow, along with The Falcon be able to save the world from The Winter Soldier and annihilation? Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.

When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge.  He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Disney presents “Saving Mr. Banks,” directed by John Lee Hancock, produced by Alison Owen, Ian Collie and Philip Steuer, and written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith. Executive producers are Paul Trijbits, Christine Langan, Andrew Mason and Troy Lum. The film will release in U.S. theaters on December 13, 2013, limited, and open wide on December 20, 2013.

Jim Henson and Fraggle Rock are in the House..Your House! By Tania Lamb

I have a hard time finding good, quality TV programming for my children lately. It seems like shows that are advertised for children are not too family friendly. Sorry, but I’m talking about you Spongebob! So I was so excited to hear that Hulu launched Jim Henson Family TV on Hulu Kids, which features 10 series from the Jim Henson collection, including the beloved and timeless series “Fraggle Rock!”

Jim Henson is best known as the creator of The Muppets, but he was also an amazing puppeteer and created advanced puppets for Fraggle Rock. I remember watching Fraggle Rock on HBO in elementary school (I can’t believe my parents had HBO).  I had an assignment for a debate in 4th grade about whether paying for some cable TV channels was worth it. One of my points was that channels such as HBO were commercial free, so they were attractive to consumers. This was 25 years ago. Now there are so many options with online video services.

I love Hulu! They offer more Henson family titles than any other video subscription service. Now subscribers of Hulu Plus get commercial free episodes of Fraggle Rock and other favorite Jim Henson characters!

If you don’t subscribe to Hulu Plus, no worries! Five rolling, consecutive episodes of each show will be available on the free, ad-supported So you’ll still be able to dance your cares away with the Fraggles!

Here are all the shows available through Jim Henson Family TV on Hulu.
“Fraggle Rock” Four seasons, 96 episodes
Fraggle Rock: Animated” One season, 13 episodes
Mopatop’s Shop” One season, 32 episodes
