The first ever D23 Expo Japan revealed a look at the new Avatar Land being planned for Animal Kingdom! Scheduled to open in 2017, the new Avatar Land will be the largest expansion ever done at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
While at the first D23 Expo Japan, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Tom Staggs shared news on projects in development for Disney parks around the globe. He showed never-before-seen videos and imagery of Shanghai Disney Resort and the new Iron Man Experience coming to Hong Kong Disneyland. But everyone agrees that the most exciting part of the presentation was a first look at the Avatar experiences in development for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
In the new world of Avatar, guests will encounter floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of plants that are alive with light and sound. It was confirmed there will be two rides as well as a walk-through experience:
- A Pirates of the Caribbean-like water ride (not yet confirmed whether an indoor dark ride like Pirates or an outside experience like Jungle Cruise).
- And a flying simulator ride which will let guest “discover what it feels like to soar into the sky riding a Banshee.” Similar to Soarin?
- A walk through a bioluminescent jungle experience.
- Outside Avatar Land, the Tree of Life will be transformed into the “Mother Tree” from Avatar at night using electronics and light projections during a new nighttime spectacular experience.
Avatar Land will be located between Africa and the Oasis and will expand beyond the area currently known as Camp Minnie-Mickey. The Festival of the Lion King will move to an all-new theater in the Africa section of the park.
As part of the expansion, there will also be added new entertainment experiences, including a new nighttime spectacular where live music, floating lanterns, water screens, and swirling animal imagery that all combine to bring a show to Discovery River.
