With 5 girls and always living near an American Girl Store, we usually end up there again and again. My daughter wanted to celebrate a birthday there, so we invited a friend and headed there for Afternoon Tea since we had never tried it.
This is the Dallas, TX location. We came on a weekday afternoon after school to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. It wasn’t hard to get a reservation, and there was only one other family there at that time. The tables and setup are really cute. Just a warning: there’s a lot of pink. You can bring your own doll to sit at the table with you or borrow one from the store.
The Afternoon Tea is served weekdays from 2-4:30 p.m. and is $13.50 a person. It is served family style, and they bring each person one of everything on the menu. This is different from lunch and dinner which is an additional $2 per person. At lunch and dinner, everyone chooses an appetizer and an entrée from a different menu.
The tea pots are adorable. They have a selection of teas to choose from or you can choose juice, soda, or hot cocoa. The girls opted for pink lemonade. I, of course, chose hot cocoa. When given the option, I always choose hot cocoa.
All the tea food is brought out at once. Everything is cute when it’s tiny.
Here’s a closer look at my plate. So I’m not going to lie. The food isn’t good. It’s just not. The little burger was barely warm, I didn’t eat my muffin, the sandwiches were decent, and the fruit was the best thing on my plate. The girls loved the food though. I had to laugh when my daughter’s friend remarked, “Wow, they must try really hard here.” She appreciated the effort. This experience was for the kids and not me, so I just went with it.
A short while later, the desserts came! Once again, cute as can be. The presentation is lovely. Nobody liked their cupcakes, the cookies were pretty good, and the votes were mixed on the mousse. The girls left with full bellies. My belly was still hungry though.
Bottom line: The total for 3 people was a little over $50 with tax and tip. Is that super outrageous? No. Is it a bargain? No. Would I bring my entire family here? No. For a special occasion or for huge fans of American Girl, this is a fun, cute experience for kids. The service was excellent. I can’t speak for a weekend when things get busier and crazier. The craft that was included with Afternoon Tea was a giant coloring poster. Probably more suited for the younger crowd as these girls lost interest pretty quickly, but they did enjoy the conversation cards at the table.
Our favorite thing is to come to the Dessert Counter. For around $5 a person, you can sit at the counter, get a good dessert (we love the mini cones, smoothies, shakes, and root beer floats), have an experience, you still get a bow to take home for you or your doll, and it doesn’t set us back too much. And your children think you’re the coolest for letting you eat ice cream for dinner.
Have you been to the American Girl Bistro? Did you think the experience was worth it?
