Calling All Soccer Fans: Let’s Rise Up, Orlando!

We are a soccer loving family! My husband played soccer all through his school years. My son started playing at age 5 and played for years on a traveling team. He ended his traveling team days went he went away to college but continued to play recreationally. My daughter played and is now a season ticket holder for the women’s team in Orlando. My granddaughter dabbled in soccer for a few years but really isn’t the kind of girl that runs! My grandson, now 4, has been learning the game from his father since he was 2.

Picture it – New Jersey, 1994: The 1994 Soccer World Cup hosted by the United States! We were fortunate to secure tickets to the World Cup games held in New Jersey at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford. Game #1 we attended as a family. Ireland vs. Italy (Italy won). Liza Minelli sang the National Anthem. As you can imagine the cost of tickets for a young family was a huge expense so we had tickets for game one for the family (4) but the remaining tickets only covered my husband and son. All these years later, my kids still talk about going to the World Cup.

Secret time – my husband’s job made it easy for him to go into the stadium when they were breaking it down after the teams left. One day he comes home from work with 2 of the huge vinyl World Cup Soccer banners that hung from the light poles in the parking lot. Those banners hung on the walls in our basement in the kids “hang-out” room until they went away to college and we moved out of that home. He also had with him 6 pieces of sod from the field which were planted in our yard! I wonder if that World Cup grass is still growing?!

So – we really are a soccer loving family. That’s why I’m so excited about the 2021 Florida Cup Soccer games being held this month in Orlando – because, after all, there’s is more to Orlando than theme parks!
