I was provided a discounted room rate for the Great Wolf Lodge. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The temperature outside was 29 degrees, and I was cold. Isn’t this why I moved to Texas? All my friends said it was warm here! I needed a mini-vacation, so I was so excited to learn that a Great Wolf Lodge was nearby. We had always wanted to try it, but I always felt like my children were too small to enjoy it. I was wrong.
We headed up on a Friday afternoon after school and check-in was very easy. Check-in is at 4:00 p.m., but you can enter the water park at 1:00 p.m. We would have liked to arrive earlier, but Texas schools…they frown upon early release. The kind check-in folks gave us wolf ears for all the children which delighted them. My two-year-old never took those ears off.
When we opened the door to our room, the kids screamed with excitement. We reserved a Loft Suite, and it is rare to find a suite that fits my family of 7, but add stairs, and my kids were very impressed. It got a “best room ever” proclamation.
We changed into our swimsuits and headed down to the water park. There was something for everyone and I really appreciated all the life jackets available. Those monster water slides are no joke, and I had a blast! I was too chicken for the Howlin’ Tornado, but my husband and oldest daughter loved it. I meandered my way to Slap Tail Pond, the wave pool, because wave pools are my jam.
Even the babies get a little water slide action in the Cub Paw Pool. I love the zero-entry in both the toddler area and the wave pool.
Buckets Incredible Craveables is a very convenient dining option while you are inside the water park. We actually got snacks there a few times like french fries, hamburgers, hummus, and drinks. The prices are pretty reasonable, too. There are some tables in the area and also upstairs around the locker area.
Grizzly Rob’s is the bar area where you can grab an adult beverage. It actually was quite a happening scene throughout the day.
The water park closes at 9:00 p.m., so we went to the room to shower and change into pajamas. I thought this would be a good time to try out MagiQuest, a really cool interactive game around the resort. Well, hey, so did everyone else. The line was just too long, so we ended up grabbing a treat at Bear Paw Sweets and Eats and playing a few arcade games.
The next morning check-out was at 11:00 a.m. We headed down to breakfast around 9:00 a.m. and we had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated at The Loose Moose Cottage. It is a breakfast buffet and was $14 per adult and $7 per child. Not too bad considering I’m used to Disney prices. There was a TON of food with an omelet station, pancakes, waffles, sausage, yogurt, cereal, pastries, fruit, a breakfast burrito bar, tater tots (Hey Napoleon, give me some of your tots), etc. I really couldn’t think of anything that was missing.
Don’t you worry, there is a Starbucks on property, too. I know friends of mine cannot live without a Starbucks, so I’m always on the lookout for them.
You have access to the water park until 9:00 p.m. the day you check-out, so back we headed for some more fun! There was a lot to try that we never got the chance to do. We got some glitter tattoos and met some of our favorite Great Wolf Lodge pals, but soon it was time to go.
I really wish we would have stayed at least two nights. There was a lot more to do than just a water park, and we ran out of time. Prices are a little high, but reasonable. I think my one major complaint is the price for Scooops Kids Spa. It is darling, and I would have loved to have taken my girls there, but at $44.99 for a manicure (yup, just the fingernails!), I just couldn’t justify it. Then multiply that by 5, and no, it wasn’t going to happen. That was the only real jaw dropper on price I experienced.
What an absolutely fun escape from the cold! We were like happy snowmen in summer over there. I also like places where I don’t feel like just a babysitter. I like being able to have fun with my kids and participate. Great Wolf Lodge fit the bill; there was something for everyone. I hope they save my spot by the fireplace, because this family will be back for sure! In the summer, they have an outdoor pool, too, and a ropes course, so this will definitely be added to the summer must-do list.
Make sure to check out www.greatwolflodge.com to find the destination closest to you. You know what that groundhog said, so hurry, and chase that cold away.
