Since I had a very, very busy week and I am slightly behind on my writing, editing, publishing, etc., I thought I would take a look back at some of my older posts, find one of my favorites and re-post for some of my newer followers. This is a post done early on that has always been one of my favorites and I hope you will enjoy you! It comes in two parts so tomorrow I will re-post Part II.
In my humble opinion, there are two things that no one should ever do at WDW with kids in tow: The Walt Disney World Cupcake Crawl and Drink Around the World at Epcot World Showcase. Due to length – this post will be split into two separate write-ups.
Part I – THE WDW CUPCAKE CRAWL
My reason for listing this activity as a “no-no” with kids is simple – there is nothing scarier then an already over-stimulated 5 yr. old with a sugar rush!
The WDW Cupcake Crawl is a challenge put out a few years ago by the Disney Food Blog. I admit I have not yet tried it – but many have and from what I understand it is not as easy as it sounds! WDW is home to some of the sweetest, largest, heaviest cupcakes on the planet. The Challenge is simple – You can either follow the list step by step or mix and match, but be sure to visit all five locations and eat 10 different cupcakes by the end of the Crawl! If this is your first try, it may take you two days to complete. Most of the cupcakes can be purchased using a Disney Dining Plan snack credit, so if you plan to try the Cupcake Crawl, save up those snack credits!
DISNEY’S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS: 4 Cupcakes required
Starring Rolls Cafe – Here you’ll find a few of Disney’s most fantastic cupcakes, including the Butterfinger Cupcake, Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake. Note that this spot closes at 4 p.m. each day, so get here early or face Cupcake Crawl failure! Here are your targets in this location:
Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake: A towering dark chocolate delight. It doesn’t look like there’s any peanut butter in there – it’s all in the frosting!
Red Velvet Cheesecake Cupcake – This fluffy confection is anything but light. Rich red velvet cake is covered in heavy cream cheese frosting. It’s all topped with a dollop of real cheesecake.
Butterfinger Cupcake – This mountain of a cupcake couples chocolate cake and chocolate fudge filling with fabulous lard heavy buttercream frosting. It’s all covered in Butterfinger candy crumbles.
Marble Cupcake – One of Disney’s prettiest confections, you’ll find marbled vanilla and white cake stuffed with chocolate fudge and covered in buttercream. A chocolate fudge topper completes the dessert.
DISNEY’S BOARDWALK: 2 Cupcakes required
Exit Hollywood Studios and take the boat to the Boardwalk Resort. Better yet, walk off those cupcakes while strolling over to the Boardwalk! The Boardwalk Bakery is your next stop on this sweet journey.
The Boardwalk Bakery changes out its seasonal cupcakes, so you never know what you’re going to get! The goal here is to get two different cupcakes (if possible) from this location. Here are a few to choose from:
Oreo Bon Bon Cupcake – A fluffy, chocolate cake confection is stuffed with cookies and cream buttercream icing and topped with vanilla.
Peanut Butter Cupcake – This cupcake seems to be the favorite of many. Peanut butter frosting the consistency of cookie dough …YUM!!!!
Strawberry Shortcake Cupcake – A lighter choice for those of you already starting to feel the effects, this summery treat (a seasonal item) might just feel a bit less heavy in your tummy. Especially since the filling is strawberries instead of frosting. This cupcake also includes a hint of Grand Marnier.
*Note, should these cupcakes not be available for any reason, visit the Contemporary Resort next to get the Black Forest Cupcake and the Dulce de Leche Cupcake, or any of the other seasonal offerings!
DISNEY’S ANIMAL KINGDOM: 2 Cupcakes required
Head over to the Boardwalk Inn’s bus stop and catch a ride to Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the next stop on your cupcake tour! Because this park closes early, make sure you are headed over by 3 p.m. at the latest!
Once there, head to Africa to Kusafiri Bakery. A tucked away bakery, Kusafiri has a few of WDW’s favorite “wild” cupcakes. Here are your targets on this leg of the journey:
White Chocolate Elephant Cupcake – The only Disney cupcake with a full-fledged chocolate-molded animal on top, the White Chocolate Elephant Cupcake pairs rich frosting with chocolate cake and toasted coconut. This one also packs the center with frosting, so be ready!
Zebra Cupcake – This pretty, modern-art-like confection is Zebra-like in a very contemporary way. Stripes of white and dark chocolate are shaved and placed on the cupcake to give the “essence” of Zebra and has super-thick frosting on top!
Cotton Top Tamarin Cupcake – Rich chocolate cake and very thick buttercream frosting, and decorated to look like your very own chocolate Tamarin!
DISNEY’S WILDERNESS LODGE: 1 Cupcake required
From Animal Kingdom, grab a bus to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge! Your target location here is Roaring Fork counter-service.
Walk all the way through the lobby at Wilderness Lodge and down toward the pool area to get to this counter-service spot. A cozy location with walls made out of “rock,” the cupcakes can be found on the bakery shelves toward the back of the restaurant. While these might not always be available, there should be at least one flavor there to meet your Crawl quota!
Carrot Cake Cupcake – A decent carrot cake base with some of the best cream cheese frosting found in WDW.
S’mores Cupcake – This cupcake offers a graham cracker-flavored cake with toasted marshmallow frosting. You’ll find a few Hershey Bar squares in the center of the cake as well. The marshmallow makes it a lighter – but sticky – dessert.
EPCOT: 1 Cupcake required
From the Wilderness Lodge, take a bus to Epcot for the last stop on the crawl. Immediately head to Karamell Küche in the Germany pavilion of the World Showcase.
This shop in Germany is sponsored by Werther’s and specializes in all things caramel, including some gorgeous cupcakes.
Vanilla Caramel or Chocolate Caramel Cupcake – These treats are topped with frosting the same flavor as their cakes, then drizzled with Werthers’ incredible caramel! A feast for the eyes and the stomach. Pick up either one to complete your Crawl!
Will you try it? What do you think? Is this on your list for your next visit? With only five stops and ten cupcakes overall, it’s not impossible!
For those of you who are really adventurous when it comes to cupcakes, plan your WDW Cupcake Crawl for the same weekend of the Annual Cupcake Lovers Convention held in early summer each year at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek! This convention features a full schedule of activities and events themed around cupcakes. Guests will have an opportunity to sample and purchase various cupcakes and participate in cupcake-themed events including cupcake decorating tips, The Cupcake Bar, a cupcake walk, cupcake displays, cupcake martinis and more.
